Generation IV International Forum is working toward licensing, construction and operating the next generation of nuclear energy systems -- known as generation IV -- providing a competitively priced and reliable supply of energy to the member countries and others around the world. As part of their charter, the Forum considers the optimum use of natural resources, and addresses nuclear safety, waste and proliferation resistance, and public perception concerns of the countries in which the systems could be deployed.

Generation IV Goals The goal-setting process for Generation IV nuclear energy systems started at a workshop held in Washington, D.C. in May 2000. Hundreds of the world’s best and brightest scientists, economists and engineers gathered to begin creation of the overarching goals for Generation IV. These goals then became the basis for collaboration and dialogue within the international nuclear research community. Read more about the goals.
Future Plans
Because the next generation of nuclear energy systems will address needed areas of improvement and offer great potential, many countries share a common interest in advanced research and development. Such development will benefit from the identification and promising research areas and collaborative efforts that should be explored by the international research community. The Forum seeks common ground between countries with similar interests as they share expertise, resources and test facilities to gain efficiencies and avoid duplication.
