Generation IV International Forum (GIF) is a cooperative research program (International Effort) of 10 countries – Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States -- committed to the development of future generation of nuclear energy systems.
The GIF countries believe that greater use of nuclear energy will be required if energy security at reduced environmental impact is to be achieved. To realize the potential of long-term benefits of nuclear energy, GIF has set the technological goals for the future systems (Generation IV) in the following areas:
- Sustainability
- Economics
- Safety and Reliability
- Proliferation Resistance and Physical
Protection
The challenging technology goals are in detail identified in the Technology Roadmap for Generation IV Nuclear Energy Systems.
The Generation IV systems comprise the nuclear reactor and its energy conversion systems, as well as the necessary facilities for the entire fuel cycle from ore extraction to final waste disposal. The GIF research and development focuses on six nuclear energy systems selected based on merits with respect to the set goals. These systems are:
The system R&D is complemented with crosscutting research on: Fuel Cycles, Fuels and Materials, Energy Conversion, Risk and Safety, Economics, and Proliferation Resistance and Physical Protection.
Generation IV International Forum Program Organization
The Forum program framework and policy guidance is provided by GIF Policy Group with representatives of each participating countries. The GIF Experts Group provides high level GIF technical program review and identifies promising directions for research. Research and development for each system is guided by system Steering Committees. The crosscut research and development is guided by a Management Board.
